Barnshaws tube bending for the Glasgow Velodrome for the Commonwealth Games in 2014

Glasgow Velodrome

As Glasgow prepares to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Barnshaw Section Benders have been curving sections for the National Indoor Sports Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, which are due to host the badminton and cycling.

The 10.5 hector site is currently under construction in the east end of Glasgow, which is part of a huge regeneration of the area. Once completed, the arena will be amongst the largest indoor sports facilities in Europe, with the Velodrome covering 90.2m x 116.4m and the Indoor Sports Arena covering 92.4m x 110.7m. Combined, the arenas will hold 9000 spectators during the games.

3,250t of steelwork has gone into the build, with both main structures built upon a steel framework. Barnshaws Section Benders have carried out the curving of over 100 sections at various sizes, including 356 x 406 x 393 columns up to 24m long on a Y-Y axis, plus 300 x 200 x 8 RHS, 150 x 100 x 6.3 RHS, 254 x 254 x 89 UC and 200 x 100 x 8 RHS. The work took just 2 months to complete, on behalf of Watson Steel Structures.
